Tonight I witnessed the incredible lengths the Obama campaign will go to silence dissenting voices. We had Stanley Kurtz on our show tonight, who is the journalist that cracked open the Annenberg Challenge files at the UIC library. He’s been going through the files for the past two days, and has apparently found some interesting documents that show a continuing and deep relationship with Bill Ayers. We called the Obama campaign to let them know that Kurtz would be on the show for the entire two hour program, and offered a spot for a representative of the Obama campaign to also join us for the entire two hour program. They refused. Or rather, I never actually heard a “no”, but the sound of the phone being hung up on me was a clear signal.
Rather than sending a representative to the show, the Obama campaign thought the better way to handle the situation would be to send out a notice to supporters to flood our e-mail box and and phone lines voicing their disapproval that we would have a “right-wing hatchet man” on WGN. Here’s a link to the section of the Obama site directing supporters to our show, and here’s a write-up in the politico about the e-mail that was sent out.
Needless to say, our phone lines were maxed out the entire night and our e-mail box was flooded. They all used the same talking points provided by the campaign, and none of them could answer simple questions, like “Why is Stanley Kurtz a liar?” Most didn’t know who Kurtz was, and were unaware anything that was actually being discussed- they didn’t want to hear or discuss what Kurtz had found, they just wanted to silence an opponent.
Rather than re-hash everything that went on, I’ll let the people who were listening do the rest of the talking. Also, here’s a link to the podcast of the show if you want to listen to it.
